Continuous Professional Development
WLYT has delivered CPD in drama and youth theatre techniques and video and camera techniques to primary and secondary teachers across West Lothian. A recent course, Games for Active Learning, was hugely over subscribed, and scored 207 out of a maximum 216 on evaluation of its usefulness in developing teaching practices in the classroom. WLYT has been awarded a contract to deliver all drama CPD in West Lothian in 2005/06 and plans to extend its influence nationally through training and supporting formal education.

Games for Active Learning
The Games for Active Learning course will provide participants with:
• a theoretical basis for the use of games
• a repertoire of basic games for use in the classroom (primary and secondary) and
• suggestions as to how games link to delivery of the curriculum.


Games for Creative Learning
The Games for Creative Learning course will provide participants with:
• a theoretical basis for the use of games
• a repertoire of creative and drama games for use in the classroom (primary and secondary) and,
• suggestions as to how games link to delivery of the curriculum.


Approaches to Voice
The Approaches to Voice course will provide participants with:
• a theoretical background to approaches to voice work
• practical games and exercises for use in the classroom to develop pupils’ vocal technique and
• a repertoire of rhymes and songs for use in the classroom.


Working with text
The Working with Text course will provide participants with:
• methods of breaking down texts for active study
• techniques for bringing a text to life through setting, character etc and
• practical activities for use when studying texts.


Theatre Design
The Theatre Design course will provide participants with:
• an understanding of the basic principals of theatre design
• practical ideas of how to develop pupils’ awareness of the relevance of design, especially at Intermediate 2 level and
• specific exploration of the development of design ideas for devised work.

Starting Points for Drama
The Starting Points for Drama course will provide participants with:
• dramatic techniques which can be used by teachers in the classroom
• suggestions for stimuli for the creation of drama by pupils and
• ideas for using drama across the primary curriculum.

Directing and devising
The Directing and Devising course will provide participants with:
• skills to facilitate task-centred learning
• strategies for supporting the initiation and development of the devising process by students
• techniques for use by directors of devised material.

An Introduction to Peter Brook
The Peter Brook course will provide participants with:
• a précis of the significance of Peter Brook to 20th century theatre
• opportunities to explore different areas of Brook’s work, and the influences on him
• exercises for introducing Brook’s techniques into the classroom.

Physicality in Theatre
The Physicality in Theatre course will provide participants with:
• a repertoire of games and exercises to encourage a physicality of approach to acting
• simple methods for encouraging students to think physically and visually about staging
• techniques for developing physical approaches to characterisation.

Storytelling in performance
The Storytelling in Performance course will provide participants with:
• a repertoire of games and exercises aimed at developing imagination and creativity
• techniques for approaching dramatic storytelling at all ages
• tips for developing performance skills.

Digital Video
The Digital Video course will provide participants with:
• technical skills on the use of digital video
• tips on how to get the best from your camera and
• suggestions for developing skills and taking the technology further.


More Digital Video
The More Digital Video course follows on from the Digital Video course in and provides participants with:
• techniques of camera use and
• shooting appropriate material for editing.


Video Editing
The Video Editing course will provide participants with:
• techniques for organising video footage
• basic skills for using software to edit short videos
• practical experience of editing a short video and
• ideas for using music in the editing process to enhance the finished video
